Finding your companion
We offer the following advice in your search for your companion:
- Learn about the breed. While Labradors are adaptable to most life styles, it is important to know what you are getting into. Spend time talking with different breeders about the breed.
- Learn about the health issues that are prevalent in the breed. It is critical to understanding the puppies risk of developing devastating issues later on in life. Ask the breeder about their breeding program and what testing they perform.
- Be wary of those who use marketing terms such as "rare". Rare implies that something is in “short supply” and that it is more valuable than what is “common”. The laws of economics state that you should be able to charge more for that which is “rare” and “desirable”. Any of us that claim that our Labradors are “Rare” in order to generate demand are probably not producing the kind of puppy you are seeking. This is Marketing 101, and I would pause to look deeper into the kennel’s motivations for producing litters.
- Be wary of breeders that attempt to sell you something other than what is recognized in the breed standard. This AKC registry does not attest to the whether the dog is well bred and meets the standards set forth of the breed, only that the dog is a Labrador Retriever because the parental origins can be traced back in time to Labrador Retrievers that are recognized as belonging to the breed by that registry or another foreign registry that is accepted by the AKC.
- A puppy is a long term commitment in time, effort, and love. Adding a companion to your family should never be a rash decision.
